Dibrugarh Court Delivers Multiple Sentences

Jorhat, Sept 3: In an extraordinary session, a Dibrugarh court issued verdicts in six distinct criminal cases, resulting in life sentences for five individuals convicted of murder, while another received a four-year term for attempted murder.
The District and Sessions Judge, Rupak Rajat, announced these convictions on Wednesday, concluding cases that had been under prosecution for several years.
Public Prosecutor Nilutpal Phukan expressed, “This marks a landmark day for the judicial system in Dibrugarh. The honorable District and Sessions Judge Rupak Rajat has convicted six individuals for serious crimes in one day, which is a moment of pride for the entire prosecution team. We appreciate the investigating officers for their prompt work.”
Among those sentenced to life imprisonment was Biki Chetia, a police constable from Dibrugarh Sadar Police Station, found guilty of murdering his pregnant spouse.
Prosecutors stated that Chetia allegedly shot his wife with his service weapon. Following his arrest by Dibrugarh Police, a chargesheet was filed, leading to his conviction.
In another case, Sukram Murah was also sentenced to life imprisonment and fined Rs 10,000 for murder.
Rajiv Chungkrang received a life sentence and a fine of Rs 50,000 after being convicted for the murders of his wife and another individual in Bairagimath, Dibrugarh.
Raju Chetia was similarly sentenced to life imprisonment and fined Rs 10,000 for his murder conviction.
Dipu Mech was sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of killing a relative, with police having previously filed a chargesheet in the matter.
Putul Garh, convicted in an attempted murder case, received a four-year rigorous imprisonment sentence.
Additional Public Prosecutors Chinmoyee Dutta and Nilutpal Phukan represented the prosecution in these six cases, which had been pursued over an extended timeframe. Phukan remarked, “Such judgments reinforce public trust in the legal system.”
