Severe Flooding in Dhemaji: Residents Face Dire Shortages
Impact of Flooding in Dhemaji District
Dhemaji, July 5: Families affected by flooding in the Jonai revenue circle of Dhemaji district are grappling with severe shortages of food, clean drinking water, fodder, and other vital supplies.
While floodwaters are beginning to recede in the impacted areas, residents continue to face challenges due to water-logging, damaged roads, and fields filled with mud and silt.
The flash floods, triggered by overflowing rivers, have submerged homes, agricultural fields, and vegetable gardens, leading to the loss of livestock and household belongings. Additionally, rural roads have been breached, crops have been destroyed, and many houses have sustained damage.
Although the district administration is providing food and relief supplies to those affected, these efforts fall short of meeting the basic needs required for families to return to normalcy.
Residents in the impacted villages are reportedly suffering from a lack of food, a critical shortage of drinking water, and insufficient supplies for their livestock.
The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has criticized both the State and Central governments, led by the BJP, for their inadequate response to the needs of flood-affected families in Dhemaji.
APCC president and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi, along with other party officials, visited the severely affected Arun Chapori (Telam) area in Jonai on Friday, where they spoke with the families impacted by the floods.
Gogoi highlighted that individuals in relief camps are in desperate need of food, clean drinking water, and other essential items, urging the State government to take immediate action to provide adequate support to those affected.
In his criticism of the BJP-led central government, Gogoi noted that while Rs 232 crore has been allocated for relief and rehabilitation over the past seven years, the State has requested approximately Rs 800 crore to address the ongoing crisis.
