Kajalgaon, Aug 17: A suspect in a rape case sustained injuries from police gunfire after allegedly attacking an officer and attempting to escape while being escorted to the crime scene in Chirang district, Assam.

The 20-year-old suspect, Nasirul Sheikh, hailing from Bartalowa village, was shot in the right leg and is currently under strict surveillance at JSB Civil Hospital in Kajalgaon.

According to Chirang SSP Dhruba Bora, "We have detained three individuals related to this case. Nasirul Sheikh is the main suspect. During the recreation of the crime scene, he assaulted one of our constables and tried to flee. In response, the investigating officer fired a shot at his leg, successfully apprehending him again."

A physician attending to Sheikh reported that he is in stable condition, but further assessments will clarify the severity of his injuries.

"He was shot in the right leg, and the bullet has passed through. He is receiving intravenous fluids and is stable, but there is some bleeding from the wound. More information about his condition will be available after additional medical evaluations," the doctor stated.

This incident is linked to the alleged gang rape of a Class 10 tribal girl by three men in Kajalgaon, which reportedly took place on July 24.

Investigations revealed that Sheikh, who was allegedly in a relationship with the minor, enticed her to Kajalgaon and took her to a rented accommodation in Chatipur, where he and two accomplices, Pir Mohammad (25) and Harunul Hassen (19), are accused of raping her.

Authorities indicated that the suspects recorded the assault and threatened to share the footage if the girl reported the incident to her family or law enforcement. The video was later allegedly disseminated on social media.

Upon discovering the video, the girl informed her family, leading to a complaint being filed at the Bengtol Police Outpost under Runikhata Police Station.

Chirang Police arrested all three suspects, who were placed in three-day judicial custody as the investigation proceeds.

The case has sparked significant outrage in the district, particularly regarding the alleged sexual assault of the minor and the distribution of the video.

In response, the All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) has called for severe penalties for the suspects and has demanded an encounter. A representative of the student organization stated, "The government must not compromise and should impose exemplary punishment. We urge the authorities to ensure these three are encountered and justice is served to the victim. We are not asking for mere leg shots; we want them to be fatally dealt with."
