Silchar/Guwahati, May 12: Authorities have ramped up efforts to dismantle illegal online betting networks throughout the state, with recent operations in Cachar district resulting in the arrest of four individuals linked to unlawful IPL betting activities.
In Silchar, the Cachar Police executed targeted raids at various locations on Monday, acting on specific intelligence regarding online betting allegedly facilitated through mobile applications.
A police team, led by Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Rajat Kumar Pal, conducted a raid on Udayan Complex Road in Das Colony, where three suspected bookies were apprehended.
The individuals arrested were identified as Suman Roy (42) from Silchar, Suman Roy (48) from Udayan Complex Road, and Nitai Roy (40) from M.P. Sarani in Silchar.
According to Additional SP Rajat Kumar Pal, initial investigations suggest that the suspects had been operating the betting network for several days during the IPL season, with total gambling transactions linked to the operation estimated to exceed Rs 50 lakh.
During the raid, authorities confiscated five notebooks believed to contain detailed gambling calculations and transaction records, cash totaling Rs 30,190, seven mobile phones suspected to be used for betting via the Om777 application, and a black bag thought to be utilized in the operation.
In a separate operation on Ashram Road, police arrested another suspected gambler, Sanjay Das, who resides near Sunlight Hospital under Silchar Police Station.
From him, police seized two mobile phones and cash amounting to Rs 15,100.
Officials reported that all suspects, along with the confiscated items, were taken to Silchar Police Station for further investigation and legal proceedings.
Police sources indicated that this operation is part of a broader statewide initiative against illegal online gambling syndicates that reportedly exploit major sporting events like the IPL to entice young people and mobile users into illegal financial activities.
This latest action follows a similar crackdown in Barpeta district, highlighting a comprehensive statewide effort against betting syndicates allegedly taking advantage of the cricket tournament through mobile applications.
Previously, on May 2, Barpeta Police initiated a special operation against IPL betting, resulting in the arrest of three individuals: Jayanta Das, Moyej Uddin Choudhury from various locations in Barpeta district, and Nazrul Islam from Guwahati.
During that operation, authorities recovered six mobile phones and cash totaling Rs 7,590 from the suspects.
