DIBRUGARH, June 14: In a significant operation, law enforcement has detained several leaders from notable organizations linked to a reported case of kidnapping, assault, and extortion involving a representative of a private contractor working with Oil India Limited (OIL). These high-profile arrests come after a thorough investigation into claims that the contractor's agent was forcibly taken, assaulted, and coerced for money.
The individuals taken into custody include Rintu Dutta, who heads the Dibrugarh district unit of Veer Lachit Sena; Konkon Rajkonwar, president of the All Assam Tai Ahom Students’ Union (Basanta faction) for the Duliajan regional committee; Manash Pratim Gohain, assistant secretary of Veer Lachit Sena; and Binod Sonowal, president of the Sonowal Kachari Yuva Manch in Duliajan.
These arrests are part of the investigation linked to Duliajan Police Station Case No. 75/2026, which has been filed under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), encompassing charges of kidnapping, assault, and extortion.
As per police reports, the case was initiated following a complaint from an official of Udipta Energy and Equipment Private Limited, a contractor for OIL. Allegations suggest that a group of individuals forcefully entered the contractor's office, created a threatening environment, abducted the official in a vehicle, physically assaulted him, and demanded a ransom.
Following the complaint, Duliajan Police commenced an investigation that has resulted in multiple arrests.
Additionally, two other leaders, Ranjit Bora, the central assistant general secretary of Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad, Asom (TAYPA), and Prahlad Gogoi, president of TAYPA’s Duliajan unit, were previously arrested in connection with a related matter and are currently in judicial custody.
In the meantime, police teams executed a raid at an OIL residential quarter in Duliajan to apprehend another suspect associated with the case. However, the individual reportedly escaped arrest after being tipped off about the police operation.
Authorities have indicated that efforts are ongoing to locate the remaining suspects, with additional arrests anticipated as the investigation unfolds.
