Bhopal/Barwani, April 8: A light earthquake measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale was recorded in the Barwani district of Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday. The tremors were felt briefly across the area, but there were no reports of damage or injuries.
The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported that the quake struck at 12:48:53 IST, with its epicenter located approximately 21 km southwest of Barwani town.
The earthquake's depth was measured at 10 km.
Residents in the vicinity, particularly around the Anjad police station and the village of Mohipura, reported feeling the tremors.
The Bhopal weather center confirmed the earthquake's occurrence, stating, "A magnitude 3.6 earthquake occurred at 12:48:53 IST today in Madhya Pradesh's Badwani (Geographical Location 21.868° N, 74.790° E) with a depth of 10 km."
Local inhabitants experienced mild shaking that lasted for about two minutes, prompting many to exit their homes as a safety precaution. However, panic was minimal due to the quake's low intensity.
District administration officials have verified that there have been no injuries or structural damage reported thus far.
This earthquake originated from the lower Narmada basin, an area known for sporadic mild seismic activity.
A senior district official remarked, "This was a minor tremor typical of the region. Residents are advised to remain calm and adhere to standard safety protocols in case of aftershocks."
Experts in seismology indicated that earthquakes of magnitude 3.6 are generally non-destructive, particularly at such shallow depths, but can be felt within a limited area.
Barwani is situated about 145 km southwest of Indore, and some individuals in nearby regions also reported feeling the vibrations.
Madhya Pradesh is classified under seismic Zone III according to the Bureau of Indian Standards, indicating a moderate risk level.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and refrain from disseminating unverified information.
The NCS is actively monitoring the situation.
