Surat, September 9: A significant fire broke out early Wednesday at the Shyam Sangini Textile Market located in the Saroli area of Surat, leading to the mobilization of approximately 20 to 22 fire brigade vehicles as firefighters worked to control the fierce flames and thick smoke that spread to the upper levels of the market, according to officials.

Rescue officials reported that the fire control room received its first emergency alert at around 12:52 a.m., prompting immediate dispatch of fire tenders from three nearby stations to the scene.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the fourth and fifth floors of the market were fully engulfed in flames, with heavy smoke drastically limiting visibility inside the structure, complicating efforts to assess and reach the affected areas.

Due to the fire's intensity, a major fire alert was issued, resulting in additional fire tenders being called in from other parts of Surat to support the firefighting and rescue efforts.

Basant Parikh, Chief Fire Officer of Surat Municipal Corporation, stated that firefighting operations were being conducted using turntable ladders and hydraulic platforms, given the significant height of the affected floors.

"We have deployed around 20-22 fire tenders to manage the situation," he noted.

He explained that the textile market features double-height floors, meaning the fourth and fifth floors are situated at a height of approximately 20 meters, making the firefighting operation particularly challenging.

As a safety measure, the electricity supply to the building has been cut off to avoid any electrical hazards during the firefighting efforts.

Parikh also mentioned that the dense smoke inside the market has rendered visibility nearly nonexistent, adding to the difficulties faced by firefighters working within the building.

"Firefighters are equipped with breathing apparatus to navigate the smoke-filled environment and reach the affected floors to combat the flames," he added.

The firefighting teams are actively working to control the fire and prevent it from spreading to other sections of the market or adjacent areas.

Officials confirmed that there have been no reports of individuals trapped inside the building, and firefighting and containment operations are ongoing.
