Kolkata, July 13: Authorities in Kolkata have apprehended a martial arts instructor accused of sexually harassing underage students during training sessions, as confirmed by a senior police official on Monday.
The arrested individual, identified as Prosenjit Das, was taken into custody on Saturday following a complaint from one of his students. He faces charges under pertinent sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
According to police reports, Das served as a treasurer at an NGO-run hostel located in the Survey Park area of south Kolkata.
His role included instructing martial arts to young girls residing in the hostel, primarily those without parental guardianship.
The NGO promoted sports participation, which necessitated Das's involvement in teaching karate and kung fu to the children.
Allegations suggest that he inappropriately touched the minor girls under the guise of martial arts instruction. Many students felt uneasy but lacked the courage to voice their concerns.
Furthermore, it is claimed that Das would lure some girls to secluded areas within the hostel, claiming to provide private lessons, where he would then sexually exploit them.
One victim, a minor girl from the Rabindra Sarobar area, had been living in the hostel after her parents' separation. She began martial arts training with Das, who allegedly abused her for several months.
Despite her attempts to avoid him, Das would intimidate her into attending private sessions where the abuse occurred.
After enduring this trauma for an extended period, the girl began experiencing panic attacks, which caught the attention of another teacher at the hostel. Upon inquiry, she confided in the teacher about her ordeal.
The teacher reported the situation to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), which subsequently visited the hostel for an investigation. Following discussions with the minor, the CWC arranged for her to be placed in a safe environment.
A formal complaint against Das was initially lodged at the Rabindra Sarobar Police Station. However, since the events transpired within the jurisdiction of the Survey Park Police Station, a zero FIR was filed and forwarded accordingly.
Following a thorough investigation, police arrested Prosenjit Das on Saturday. Authorities are currently interrogating him to determine the extent of his alleged offenses against minors.
