Jorhat, Oct 7: Authorities in Jorhat have dismantled a suspected honey-trapping and extortion operation, leading to the arrest of three men and two women, one of whom is believed to be the mastermind behind the scheme.
The arrested individuals include Marami Das Neog, Ankit Paul, Sanjib Das, Ankit Bora, and Baby Bora, with Paul and Das residing in Garmur Itakhuli, according to police reports.
A police spokesperson indicated that Das Neog, the alleged mastermind, was apprehended on Wednesday alongside Bora and Baby Bora. Earlier, Paul and Das had already been taken into custody in relation to this case.
Authorities confiscated mobile devices from the suspects, discovering numerous QR codes associated with digital transactions, which suggests that additional victims may have been targeted.
“We suspect that a significant network has been dismantled. We have also uncovered various objectionable materials,” the officer stated.
Reports suggest that the group targeted wealthy men via social media platforms.
The suspects reportedly formed romantic connections with their victims, subsequently inviting them to private meetings where intimate moments were allegedly recorded.
These recordings were then purportedly used to blackmail the victims for money, according to police.
The investigation began when a bank manager from Tinsukia reported the incident to Jorhat Police on October 2.
The victim had met a woman from Jorhat on Instagram in July, leading to a close relationship. She later invited him to Jorhat, where he visited in August.
According to the FIR, the man met the woman around 1 am and was taken to her rented place near Ajanta Bypass and ISBT in Jorhat.
Police revealed that two men were present at the location and allegedly recorded the encounter between the man and the woman.
“After capturing the events, the two male suspects reportedly demanded money from the victim,” a police officer explained.
The victim initially paid Rs 2 lakh, but the suspects later demanded an additional Rs 1 lakh, eventually escalating their demand to Rs 5 lakh, which prompted him to seek police assistance.
Following the FIR, law enforcement tracked down and arrested two men involved in the extortion.
Authorities have also received leads about an ONGC employee who might have fallen victim to this alleged scheme. Investigators are looking into the possibility of other victims.
This incident follows another honey-trapping and extortion case uncovered in Jorhat in July 2025, where brothers Gajanan Munda and Nand Kishor Munda were accused of extorting nearly Rs 70 lakh from a local businessman over three years.
The current investigation is ongoing, with police analyzing the seized devices and financial records to assess the full scope of the alleged operation.
