Guwahati, Sept 28: The main suspect in the case of 22-year-old Nimisha Thakuria's death at a homestay in Dharapur appeared in court on Monday. Authorities are treating the incident as a suspicious death that may involve murder.

Ashique Ali, who was reportedly at the homestay with Nimisha, has been taken into custody. Additionally, Mitu Ali, a staff member at the homestay, has also been detained.

Reports suggest that Mitu may have provided alcohol to both Ashique and Nimisha during their stay, although this claim is still under investigation and has not been independently verified.

The tragic event unfolded on September 26. Following his arrest, Ashique allegedly informed investigators that Nimisha had taken her own life by hanging herself from a ceiling fan.

However, police are probing the events leading up to her death, particularly what transpired at the homestay before she was transported to a medical facility.

According to a police spokesperson, three individuals brought Nimisha to the Primary Health Centre in Garal around 4:30 AM.

She was later referred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

As part of the investigation, authorities have confiscated the homestay's registration records, CCTV footage, and Nimisha's mobile device. Her body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the investigation will also consider the statements made by Nimisha's parents.

“The girl is from my constituency, and we will take into account all statements circulating on social media, including those from her family. The inquiry will proceed, and I will ensure that it is conducted thoroughly,” Sarma remarked during a press conference in Raha.

Sarma emphasized that an investigation will be carried out and that law enforcement will take necessary actions.

“The girl was of legal age. We must adhere to certain moral standards to maintain societal harmony. We have customs that should be respected to prevent such incidents within families. An inquiry will be conducted into this case, and appropriate measures will be taken by the police,” he added.

The investigation is ongoing, with police analyzing the evidence gathered from the homestay and awaiting the results of the post-mortem to clarify the circumstances of Nimisha's death.
