Guwahati, June 15: A gas leak was detected from an ONGC pipeline at Silakuti Bhakat Gaon in the Sivasagar district on Monday morning. Officials confirmed that the situation has been managed effectively.
Representatives from the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) stated that the compromised pipeline has been isolated, and gas supply from the source has been halted to avert any further issues.
"Upon receiving the alert this morning, we promptly arrived at the location and ceased the supply. There is no immediate cause for concern, and we expect everything to return to normal by evening," remarked an ONGC official present at the scene.
The official clarified that gas is no longer flowing into the damaged section, with only residual gas escaping from the pipeline.
"Once the residual gas is cleared, we will proceed with the necessary repairs," he added.
The official also acknowledged the concerns regarding the pipeline's integrity, mentioning that a proposal for replacement has been submitted and is pending approval from the relevant authorities.
Additionally, he indicated that compensation for any losses incurred by local residents is being considered.
When questioned about previous assurances against such leaks, the official stated, "While we provided guarantees, such incidents can sometimes occur unexpectedly."
However, local residents voiced their dissatisfaction with the response, claiming that signs of leakage had been apparent for months.
One farmer attributed the incident to the ongoing use of outdated infrastructure despite repeated promises of upgrades.
"The pipeline is extremely old. Officials had promised new installations, yet they continue to rely on the old infrastructure. The fumes are affecting the nearby residents," he expressed.
Emphasizing the agricultural impact, the farmer noted that local farmers are hesitant to use tractors and machinery in their fields due to safety fears.
"A slow gas leak has persisted for nearly three months. Since yesterday, vapor-like fumes have also begun to emerge. This is a serious concern for those living nearby," another resident stated, adding that similar incidents in the past had gone without compensation.
The resident further claimed that workers had visited the site but failed to take sufficient action. "If the gas ignites, everything around could be destroyed," he cautioned.
Some residents alleged irregularities in maintenance practices and claimed that previous calls for accountability had revealed corruption involving pipeline contractors. At the time of this report, ONGC had not issued an official statement regarding these allegations.
