Escape from De-addiction Centre Sparks Outrage in Biswanath
Incident Overview
Biswanath Police have launched a detailed investigation and are continuing their inquiry into the matter.
Biswanath, June 5: A shocking incident occurred on Friday morning when 34 young individuals undergoing treatment at a de-addiction facility in Biswanath reportedly escaped. This event followed the circulation of videos that allegedly depicted abuse at rehabilitation centres in the area, igniting public outrage.
The escape took place at the Live Well De-addiction Centre situated in Madhupur. Reports indicate that the youths managed to force their exit from the centre and scattered throughout the town.
While many were subsequently located and rescued from various spots in Biswanath, several others remain unaccounted for.
The youths have accused the centre's management of inflicting severe physical and psychological abuse during their time there. One individual recounted, “Munna Hazarika had beaten me earlier. They hit me with an iron rod on my hand. We were tortured a lot. During winter, I was given only a carpet to sleep on.”
Just two days prior, videos allegedly showing the cruel treatment of two youths at different de-addiction centres in Biswanath, including the Live Well facility, went viral on social media, leading to widespread public condemnation.
In response to the incident, the Social Welfare Department filed a complaint at the Biswanath Chariali Police Station. Following this, police apprehended Raja Shah, linked to the Live Well De-addiction Centre, while another owner, Munna Hazarika, is currently evading capture.
With the proprietors absent, conditions within the centre reportedly worsened. The youths claimed they were deprived of sufficient food and necessary medications.
Faced with intolerable conditions, the youths made the decision to escape the centre on Friday morning.
Authorities are now in communication with the parents and guardians of the rescued individuals and are organizing their safe return home.
This incident has raised significant concerns regarding the management, oversight, and accountability of de-addiction centres that operate under the guise of rehabilitation.
