Assam Sees Significant Drop in Cyber Crime Cases Compared to National Trends
Decline in Cyber Crime Incidents in Assam

GUWAHATI, May 22: Unlike the national trend, Assam has experienced a notable reduction in cyber crime cases.
In 2024, the state reported 408 cyber crime incidents, a significant decrease from 909 cases in 2023, reflecting a drop of over 55 percent, according to the latest statistics from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
In contrast, India as a whole saw a rise in cyber crime, with 101,928 incidents reported in 2024, marking an increase of approximately 18 percent from the 86,420 cases recorded the previous year.
The decline in Assam's cyber crime figures is evident when compared to previous years.
Police sources attribute this reduction to ongoing crackdowns on cyber criminals and increased public awareness initiatives.
It's important to note that in 2021, Assam ranked fifth in the country for cyber crime cases, with 4,846 incidents reported.
The state had 1,733 cases in 2022, placing it ninth nationally, and in 2023, it fell to 13th position among all states and Union Territories.
In 2024, Telangana led the country with 27,230 cyber crime cases, followed by Karnataka with 21,993, Uttar Pradesh with 11,073, Maharashtra with 9,922, and Bihar with 6,380.
During the year, Assam saw 360 arrests related to cyber crime, with 285 individuals charge-sheeted.
Among the cases in Assam, 115 were for computer-related offenses, one for cyber terrorism, and 253 for the publication or transmission of obscene material electronically. Additionally, one case involved an attempted offense under Section 84(C), while 37 were categorized under other sections of the Information Technology Act, and one was for fraud.
Regarding motives, 121 cases were driven by personal revenge, 18 by emotional factors like anger, 55 were fraud-related, 43 involved extortion, five aimed to cause disrepute, 42 were for sexual exploitation, three had political motives, two were for business development, one was related to piracy, and 118 were for other reasons.
Out of all cyber crime cases in Assam, 196 victims were women, and 20 were children.
In contrast, all other Northeastern states, except Tripura, reported an increase in cyber crime incidents during the same period.
Arunachal Pradesh saw a rise to 78 cases in 2024 from 24 the previous year, while Mizoram recorded 50 cases compared to 31 in 2023.
Manipur reported five cases in 2024, up from three, and Meghalaya's numbers increased to 97 from 64. Nagaland had 14 cases in 2024, compared to just two in 2023. However, Tripura experienced a slight decline, with cases dropping to 33 from 36.
