Celebrating Cricket and Sustainability

In a remarkable event in London, former Indian cricket captains Sourav Ganguly and Ajinkya Rahane joined a host of cricketing icons and royal figures to celebrate the intersection of cricket and environmental sustainability, as reported by The Royal Foundation.

Invited by Prince William, Rahane, who recently concluded his cricketing career, took part in a friendly tennis-ball cricket match that served as a precursor to the upcoming Earthshot Prize awards ceremony, organized by The Royal Foundation, set to occur in Mumbai next month. This match was held on The Mall, a ceremonial avenue typically reserved for royal processions, and featured cricketing legends such as Sourav Ganguly, West Indies great Brian Lara, and England's Joe Root and Harry Brook.

Rahane Shares His Experience

In a LinkedIn post, Rahane reflected on the event, describing the tennis-ball cricket match as an unforgettable experience that showcased the shared passion for cricket between India and the UK. He emphasized the event's role in promoting environmental sustainability ahead of the Earthshot Prize ceremony in Mumbai this November, highlighting the need for collective action to safeguard the planet.

Rahane expressed, "Cricket has taken me to some remarkable venues across the world, but playing tennis-ball cricket right on The Mall in London with Buckingham Palace in the backdrop is an experience that will stay with me for a long time."

He continued, "Yesterday was about celebrating the shared love for the game between India and the UK, but more importantly, shining a light on a cause that matters far beyond the boundary ropes. It was a privilege to spend time with Prince William and catch up with wonderful friends and icons of the sport, discussing the unifying spirit of cricket and our shared responsibilities for the future."

The Importance of Collective Action

Rahane further noted, "The energy was set for what promises to be an impactful moment: The Earthshot Prize heading to Mumbai this November. Repairing and protecting our planet across nature, clean air, oceans, waste reduction, and climate requires the same values the sport teaches us every day—discipline, collective effort, and genuine intent. A memorable morning in London for a cause that deserves all our support. Looking forward to welcoming The Earthshot Prize to my home city next month."
