CPI(M) Announces Candidates for Assam Assembly Elections

The CPI(M) has officially announced its candidates for the upcoming assembly elections in Assam, retaining incumbent MLA Manoranjan Talukdar. The party is confident about winning both contested seats, Bhawanipur-Sorbhog and Goreswar, as part of a united opposition effort against the ruling BJP. With a coalition that includes Congress and other parties, CPI(M) aims to secure a majority in the assembly. The elections are set for April 9, and the political landscape is heating up as parties finalize their strategies.
 

CPI(M) Selects Candidates for Upcoming Assembly Polls


Guwahati, Mar 16: The Communist Party of India (Marxist), part of the opposition coalition led by Congress in Assam, has officially announced its candidates for two assembly seats ahead of the elections scheduled for April. Among the nominees is the current MLA, Manoranjan Talukdar, who will be contesting again.


Suprakash Talukdar, the state secretary of CPI(M), expressed confidence in winning both seats during the elections set for April 9.


"We have chosen to contest in two constituencies - Bhawanipur-Sorbhog and Goreswar. Our candidates will represent the united opposition in these areas," Talukdar stated.


Manoranjan Talukdar, who currently serves as the MLA for Bhawanipur, will run from the newly renamed and restructured Bhawanipur-Sorbhog constituency following the 2023 delimitation.


The party has also nominated Bapu Ram Boro for the Goreswar seat, which is located within the Bodoland Territorial Region.


"CPI(M) is collaborating with secular groups to remove the BJP from power in Assam. We are optimistic about our candidates achieving a majority," Suprakash Talukdar added.


The opposition alliance includes Congress, CPI(M), Assam Jatiya Parishad, All Party Hill Leaders Conference, and CPI(ML) Liberation.


In the current assembly of 126 members, the ruling BJP holds 64 seats, with its allies AGP having nine, UPPL seven, and BPF three.


On the opposition side, Congress has 26 MLAs, AIUDF has 15, and CPI(M) has one, along with one Independent legislator.
