COVID-19 Resurgence in Asia Sparks Concerns in India
COVID-19 Cases Rise in Asia
The COVID-19 virus has made a resurgence in Asia, with notable increases in cases reported in Singapore and Hong Kong. This uptick has reignited fears among the Indian population, reminiscent of the widespread devastation caused by the virus in 2020-21.
In India, states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra are witnessing a rise in COVID-19 patients. In Mumbai, two individuals infected with the virus have died at KEM Hospital, prompting authorities to tighten restrictions. The health department has been instructed to remain vigilant. However, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) clarified that the fatalities were due to severe comorbidities rather than COVID-19 itself.
Experts attribute the increase in cases to waning immunity and the emergence of new virus variants, particularly the JN.1 strain and its sub-lineages. Since May 12, India has recorded 164 new cases, bringing the total number of active COVID-19 cases to 257, with the highest numbers in Kerala, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu.
Last week alone, Kerala reported 69 new infections, followed by Maharashtra with 44 and Tamil Nadu with 34. Currently, Maharashtra has 56 active cases. According to reports, nearly 200 newly established primary health centers (PHCs) and sub-centers are reportedly non-functional due to inadequate staffing, lack of funds, and poor facilities.
