Court Sentences Two for Hoisting Khalistani Flag in Moga
Significant Ruling by NIA Special Court
A special court under the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has delivered a crucial verdict in a case that challenges the sovereignty of the nation. The court has sentenced two individuals to five years and six months in prison for hoisting a Khalistani flag at the Deputy Commissioner's office in Moga, Punjab, in 2020. The NIA stated that the court, located in SAS Nagar, Mohali, imposed this sentence on the accused, Inderjeet Singh and Jaspal Singh, both residents of Moga, along with a fine of ₹16,000 each.
Background of the Case
Previously, the NIA had filed charges against these two along with two other arrested individuals and two absconding suspects, Pannu and his associate Harpreet Singh, who are currently residing in the United States. In 2021, the Mohali special court declared Pannu and Harpreet as fugitives in this case. On August 14, 2020, just a day before Independence Day, Inderjeet and Jaspal climbed the administrative building and raised a saffron-yellow flag inscribed with 'Khalistan'.
Details of the Investigation
According to the NIA, the accused also disrespected the national flag. The investigation revealed that Harpreet had financially incentivized Inderjeet and Jaspal for this act. Reports indicate that Pannu had released a video on social media between August 10 and 11, 2020, urging the people of Punjab and Haryana to hoist Khalistani flags. The NIA noted that Pannu had promised $125,000 to any Indian youth who would hoist the Khalistani flag at the Red Fort and $2,500 for raising it at any government office.
