Court Action in Sambhal Violence Incident

A court in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, has mandated the filing of a first information report (FIR) against Additional Superintendent of Police Anuj Chaudhary. This decision stems from allegations that a man was shot during violent clashes in the district in November 2024.

At the time of the incident, Chaudhary served as the circle officer for Sambhal.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Vibhanshu Sudheer also ordered that an FIR be lodged against Inspector Anuj Tomar and several unidentified police officers.

The Sambhal Police announced plans to contest this ruling.

Violence erupted in Sambhal on November 24, 2024, when a group of Muslims protested against a court-ordered survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid located in Chandausi town.

This survey was initiated following a lawsuit claiming that the mosque was constructed in 1526 by Mughal emperor Babar on the site of the ancient Shri Hari Har Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Kalki.

Reports indicate that five individuals lost their lives during the unrest.

Yameen, the father of the man who was reportedly shot, stated that his son, Alam, had gone out to sell rusks that day and was shot by police near the mosque.

Advocate Chaudhary Akhtar Hussain, representing Alam's family, claimed that the 24-year-old had to seek medical attention discreetly to avoid police pressure.

The petition naming Chaudhary, Tomar, and other police personnel was submitted to the court in February 2025, with the case being heard last Friday and the ruling made public on Tuesday.
