Police Officers Suspended Over Allegations of Bribery

In an unusual turn of events, law enforcement officials from Kerala and Gujarat are accused of colluding to resolve a cyber fraud case registered in another state by allegedly accepting bribes from suspects in Kochi. This information was disclosed by authorities on Friday.

The head of the Ernakulam rural district police has suspended Grade Sub-Inspector Abdul Rauf and civil police officers Shafiq, Sanju Jose, and Sakir, while also ordering an investigation into the incident.

According to an official, the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) has initiated a parallel inquiry into the matter. A team from the Gujarat police had recently arrived in Ernakulam to track down three individuals accused in a cyber fraud case registered in their state.

The team sought assistance from the Kerala police as the suspects were located within the jurisdiction of the Kuruppampady police station. The four suspended officers were assigned to assist the Gujarat police team.

It has been reported that they allegedly conspired with Gujarat police personnel and solicited money from the relatives of the accused to settle the case. Subsequently, the relatives reportedly paid a sum of ₹6.60 lakh.

Authorities revealed that out of this amount, ₹60,000 was handed over to the Gujarat police officers, while the remaining sum was taken by the Kerala police personnel. The intelligence branch of the Kerala police received information regarding the alleged corruption and conducted a covert investigation.

Based on the special branch's report, the head of the Ernakulam rural district police ordered the suspension of the four officers on Thursday and initiated departmental action.

They also decided to inform the Gujarat police about the alleged corruption, improper handling of the investigation, and the officers involved. Meanwhile, a team from the VACB conducted a search operation at the Kuruppampady police station on Thursday. An official noted that in the past two days, six police officers in Ernakulam district have been suspended in connection with various disciplinary issues.
