Cooper Connolly Aims for IPL Glory with Punjab Kings
Connolly's Ambition in IPL 2026
In his inaugural season with the Punjab Kings, all-rounder Cooper Connolly is determined to help his team clinch the IPL title, while also honoring the legacy of legendary Australian players who have previously donned the franchise's colors.
Under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, the Punjab Kings have kicked off IPL 2026 with an impressive unbeaten streak. They are set to face the Sunrisers Hyderabad in Mullanpur this Saturday. The franchise has a rich history of featuring notable Australian cricketers, including Shaun Marsh, Adam Gilchrist, Josh Inglis, and Glenn Maxwell. As one of the latest recruits, Connolly aspires to make his mark and contribute to the team's achievements.
Aiming for a Lasting Legacy
Speaking to JioStar Press Room ahead of the IPL 2026 Rivalry Week, Connolly expressed, "Winning IPL trophies is a goal for everyone. Leaving a legacy is nice, but the players you mentioned are world-class. I have much to do to reach their level, so I’m focused on the present."
He emphasized his commitment to the team, stating, "I want to leave something behind, hopefully an IPL trophy this year. My focus is on playing my role and giving my best for the team."
Inspired by Shaun Marsh
Growing up, Connolly idolized Shaun Marsh and now finds himself sharing a dressing room with Australia's T20I captain, Mitchell Marsh. He also plays for Western Australia in domestic cricket, following in the footsteps of the Marsh brothers.
Shaun Marsh made a significant impact during the inaugural IPL season in 2008, scoring an unbeaten 84 on his debut against the Deccan Chargers. Connolly has similarly made a strong start to his IPL journey, scoring an unbeaten 72 off 44 balls on his debut against the Gujarat Titans, leading Punjab Kings to a three-wicket victory and earning the Player of the Match title.
Reflecting on his admiration for Marsh, Connolly shared, "I loved watching Shaun Marsh as a kid. I’m fortunate to be close with Mitch and Shaun. I’ve communicated with Shaun during his playing days, which I cherished."
Regarding their batting styles, he remarked, "Some say our cover drives are similar, but his is more elegant. I enjoyed watching him play on his terms, and I aspire to do the same. There’s still a lot of cricket left in this tournament, and I hope to connect with him soon."
