Hojai, Oct 13: Recent claims of misconduct regarding the appointment, promotion, and financial management of Dr. Manabendra Dutta Choudhury, Vice-Chancellor of Rabindranath Tagore University, have sparked renewed public discourse. The Kutumba Suraksha Parishad (KSP) is calling for his resignation and an independent inquiry into the matter.
During a press briefing on October 2, KSP's central president, Satya Ranjan Bora, raised critical questions about Choudhury’s academic qualifications, his suitability for the Vice-Chancellor role, and his alleged involvement in administrative and financial issues at both Assam University in Silchar and Rabindranath Tagore University.
Bora urged the Assam government and relevant authorities to investigate these allegations thoroughly and take necessary legal actions. He mentioned that formal complaints had been submitted to the Chief Minister, the Education Minister, and the Governor of Assam.
A significant portion of the allegations pertains to ongoing proceedings in the Gauhati High Court regarding Choudhury’s promotion to professor at Assam University. Bora referenced documents indicating that an affidavit from the university's Registrar raised concerns about the promotion process, calling for a comprehensive investigation into Choudhury's appointment, promotion, and potential misuse of university funds.
Additionally, Bora highlighted observations from the affidavit that pointed to audit objections and irregularities in official records, asserting that the university had requested a thorough review of these issues in court.
The allegations also question whether UGC regulations were adhered to during Choudhury’s promotion. Bora noted that Choudhury began his career at Assam University as a lecturer in 2002 and questioned if he met the necessary eligibility criteria and experience before being promoted to professor.
Concerns were also raised about discrepancies in the PhD completion dates listed in two applications submitted by Choudhury throughout his academic tenure.
KSP further accused Choudhury of irregularities regarding his attendance at the Hojai university, executing projects without proper tendering, and managing student admissions and fees. Bora specifically criticized the PhD admission fee set at Rs 76,000, comparing it unfavorably to fees charged by other universities in Assam.
Stressing the need for accountability in public institutions, KSP insisted that these allegations be investigated through a transparent and appropriate process.
The KSP has reiterated its demand for Choudhury’s resignation and called on the relevant authorities to take action after reviewing the allegations and associated records.
Rabindranath Tagore University, situated in Hojai, was formed by upgrading Hojai College and is named in honor of the Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.
