The selection of Bangladeshi cricketer Mustafizur Rahman by Shah Rukh Khan for IPL 2026 has ignited a heated debate. While some leaders criticize Khan for supporting a player from a country seen as hostile to India, others defend his choice, emphasizing solidarity with minorities in Bangladesh. This controversy highlights the intersection of sports, politics, and community sentiments in India. Read on to explore the various perspectives surrounding this issue.

Shah Rukh Khan's IPL Decision Sparks Debate

Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi, the National President of the All India Muslim Jamaat, has stated that Bollywood star and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) owner Shah Rukh Khan's choice to include Bangladeshi cricketer Mustafizur Rahman in the IPL 2026 season is not an act of betrayal.

The selection of Mustafizur Rahman by KKR for a significant sum of Rs 9.20 crore at the IPL auction has led to mixed reactions. Critics argue that Rahman should not participate in the tournament due to ongoing violent incidents against religious minorities in Bangladesh.

BJP Leader Labels SRK a 'Traitor'

BJP leader Sangeet Som has accused Shah Rukh Khan of being a traitor for investing in players from a nation perceived as hostile to India. He stated, "Given the persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh, including violence against women and anti-India sentiments, it is unacceptable for Shah Rukh Khan to support players from there. He should realize that his success is due to India, yet he chooses to invest in those who oppose it. Mustafizur Rahman will not be welcomed here," Som remarked.

He further criticized Khan, asserting that individuals like him enjoy the benefits of India while supporting countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Support for SRK from Muslim Leaders

In response to Som's remarks, Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi defended Shah Rukh Khan, emphasizing that Indian Muslims are indeed concerned about the plight of minorities in Bangladesh. He stated, "If Shah Rukh Khan has chosen to sign a cricketer, it does not equate to betrayal. This should not be misconstrued in any way."

Barelvi urged understanding and solidarity with those facing persecution in Bangladesh, asserting that Khan's actions should not be condemned.
