Controversy Erupts Over Trump's Remarks on Women's Olympic Hockey Team
Trump's Call to Men's Olympic Hockey Team Sparks Debate
The congratulatory phone call made by US President Donald Trump to the gold-medal-winning men's Olympic hockey team has ignited a new wave of controversy. This incident has drawn attention to his comments regarding the women's team and their absence from recent events at the White House. The backlash began after a video surfaced showing Trump speaking to the men's team from their locker room, facilitated by FBI Director Kash Patel. This call took place shortly after the men's team clinched Olympic gold, following the women's hockey team’s thrilling 2–1 overtime win against Canada.
During the call on February 22, Trump humorously suggested inviting the women's team to the White House, stating, “We’re going to have to bring the women’s team, you do know that?” which elicited laughter from those present. He further remarked that failing to do so might lead to his impeachment.
Subsequently, the men's team visited the White House and attended the State of the Union address on February 24, where Trump announced plans to bestow the Presidential Medal of Freedom upon star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck. However, the women’s team was absent, citing prior academic and professional obligations. USA Hockey released a statement expressing that the athletes were honored by the invitation but could not attend due to scheduling conflicts.
During his State of the Union address, Trump reiterated that the women’s team would also be invited to the White House, indicating they would visit “soon.” USA Hockey later clarified that any potential visit would depend on the players’ availability after their competitive seasons.
This incident has elicited mixed reactions from athletes and public figures alike. Rapper Flavor Flav even offered to host a separate celebration to honor the women’s Olympic champions. Among the men’s team, some players voiced their support for the women, acknowledging the controversy. Forward Jack Hughes stated that the team stands firmly behind their female counterparts, highlighting the mutual respect shared between the two teams. Backup goaltender Jeremy Swayman described the locker-room reaction as unfortunate, given the women’s team’s significant achievement.
US women’s team captain Hilary Knight criticized Trump’s comment as a “distasteful joke,” arguing that it overshadowed the historic accomplishments of women athletes at the Olympics. She later mentioned that the team had not yet made a decision regarding the White House invitation. The White House has not provided a specific timeline but expressed eagerness to host the Olympic champions.
