NCP Leader's Controversial Statement
On Saturday, Jitendra Awhad, a legislator from the NCP (Sharad faction), sparked a new controversy with his remarks about Sanatan Dharma. He stated, 'Sanatan Dharma has ruined India,' and claimed that 'there has never been a religion called Sanatan Dharma; we are followers of Hinduism.'
Details of Awhad's Statement
Awhad, who has served as a legislator four times, made several serious allegations in his statement. He accused Sanatan Dharma of being responsible for preventing the coronation of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and for defaming Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. He further alleged that followers of this faith attempted to assassinate social reformer Jyotirao Phule.
Further Allegations
He continued, 'These individuals threw cow dung and filth on Savitribai Phule. This same Sanatan Dharma conspired to murder Shahu Maharaj. It denied Dr. B.R. Ambedkar the right to drink water or attend school.' Awhad also mentioned that Dr. Ambedkar opposed Sanatan Dharma, burned the Manusmriti, and rejected its traditions. He urged people not to hesitate in labeling Sanatan Dharma and its ideology as 'distorted.'
Political Reactions to Awhad's Remarks
In response to Awhad's comments, both the BJP and Shiv Sena expressed strong disapproval. Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC described Awhad's statement as part of a 'trend' against Sanatan Dharma. She questioned, 'Who is Jitendra Awhad to oppose figures like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Sambhaji Maharaj, and Jyotirao Phule?' She challenged him to demonstrate his understanding of Sanatan Dharma.
BJP's Condemnation
BJP MP Sambit Patra condemned Awhad's remarks, stating, 'We are tolerant, which is why we are expressing our protest through a press conference.' He added that had such a statement been made against Islam or Muslims, the response would have been different. Patra also questioned Sharad Pawar and his daughter Supriya Sule about whether Awhad's comments reflected his personal views or the official stance of their party. He emphasized that it is unacceptable to accuse a majority population and label them as intolerant.
