Controversy Erupts Over Maharashtra Municipal Elections and EVM Backup Procedures

New Controversy in Maharashtra Municipal Elections

The Maharashtra municipal elections have sparked a fresh controversy following the announcement by the election commission regarding the use of a backup system during vote counting. On January 16, in the event of a technical failure with the electronic voting machines (EVMs), the commission stated that the Printing Auxiliary Display Unit (PADU) would be utilized as a backup. Officials clarified that the standard procedure involves counting the votes recorded in the EVMs by linking the Control Unit with the Ballot Unit. However, if technical issues persist even after this connection, the PADU will be employed to complete the counting process. This marks the first time the PADU will be used as a backup to ensure a smooth counting process during municipal elections.

Opposition from the Thackeray Family

Meanwhile, Raj Thackeray, the leader of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), has strongly opposed the election commission's decision, alleging that rules are being altered mid-process. He expressed concerns that traditionally, campaigning would cease entirely once the election period ended, but a new practice has been introduced. He questioned why similar measures were not implemented during Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. The commission has allowed candidates to meet voters but prohibited the distribution of pamphlets, which Thackeray interpreted as a signal that monetary inducements might be permissible. He raised questions about the introduction of the new PADU machines without prior demonstration to political parties or public explanation.

Uddhav Thackeray Raises Concerns with Election Commission

Uddhav Thackeray, the leader of Shiv Sena (UBT), also expressed his objections by writing to the election commission, accusing it of favoring the government. He questioned the reliability of the new machinery, asking what guarantees exist to prevent malfunctions. Thackeray claimed that the commission is assisting the government in securing electoral victories. He urged party workers to remain vigilant and closely monitor candidates from the ruling coalition, as he suspects they may attempt to influence voters through monetary means.
