Controversy Erupts Over Election Nomination Process in Mandi
Election Nomination Process Under Scrutiny

Mandi: A minor controversy arose during the election for the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Mandi Municipal Corporation on Monday. The Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister, Jairam Thakur, raised concerns regarding what he termed a significant procedural error in the nomination process overseen by the District Election Officer (Deputy Commissioner).
Sources present during the election indicated that Thakur highlighted discrepancies in the nomination papers submitted for the Mayor and Deputy Mayor positions, asserting that they did not comply with the established election procedures. According to municipal election regulations, nomination papers must be properly supported by a proposer, and Thakur contended that the scrutiny process had not adhered to these requirements.
Initially, the District Election Officer was hesitant to accept Thakur's objection, insisting that the process was valid. However, upon reviewing the relevant election rules, the officer recognized the procedural mistake and instructed that the necessary corrections be made before proceeding with the voting.
Thakur later stated that if the error had not been rectified promptly, the election could have faced legal challenges, potentially undermining the entire process. He emphasized that strict compliance with election regulations is crucial for preserving the integrity, transparency, and credibility of democratic institutions.
The objection caused a brief delay in the proceedings, but once the corrections were made, polling resumed smoothly, and the elections were conducted without further incident, with results announced shortly thereafter.
This incident has ignited political discussions in Mandi, with the BJP asserting that their timely intervention averted a possible legal dispute regarding the election process. As of now, the district administration has not released an official statement addressing the matter.
