Controversy Erupts Over Conditional Bail Granted to Kuldeep Singh Sengar
High Court's Ruling
The conditional bail granted to Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the main accused in the Unnao rape case and a former BJP legislator, by the Delhi High Court has sparked significant controversy. The victim has described this decision as a 'death knell' for her family's safety, while the CBI is preparing to challenge the ruling in the Supreme Court.
Details of the Court's Decision
The bench of the Delhi High Court suspended Sengar's life sentence, citing that he has already served 7 years and 5 months in prison. However, the court imposed strict conditions, requiring Sengar to maintain a distance of at least 5 kilometers from the victim and her family. Additionally, he must provide a personal bond of 1.5 million rupees along with three sureties of the same amount.
Sengar Remains in Custody
Despite being granted bail in the rape case, Sengar will continue to remain incarcerated due to a separate 10-year sentence related to the custodial death of the victim's father.
Victim's Reaction
Following the High Court's ruling, the victim and her mother staged a strong protest in Delhi. The victim expressed her distress, stating, 'The safety of witnesses and lawyers has already been compromised. Granting bail to the guilty raises questions about the safety of daughters in our country. This decision feels like a death sentence for us. It seems that only those with money can win.'
Political Reactions
Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi met with the victim at her residence and condemned the police's actions in forcibly dispersing the protesters. Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Minister OP Rajbhar reassured the family, stating, 'The court has ordered a 5 km distance, so there is no need for concern regarding safety. The administration will ensure compliance with the rules.'
CBI's Next Steps
A spokesperson for the CBI confirmed that the agency is reviewing the High Court's order and plans to challenge it in the Supreme Court soon. The agency had previously opposed Sengar's bail application vigorously.
