Controversy Erupts Over BJP Leader's Assault on Visually Impaired Woman in Madhya Pradesh
Incident Sparks Outrage
A video surfaced on Monday depicting a leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, physically assaulting a visually impaired woman inside a church. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, has ignited significant controversy as the leader accused the woman of facilitating religious conversions.
The altercation took place in the Hawa Bagh area, as reported by a local news outlet. In the footage, Anju Bhargava, the Vice President of the BJP's Jabalpur city unit, can be seen verbally attacking the woman while a police officer is present.
During the confrontation, Bhargava is recorded twisting the woman's arm and forcefully grabbing her face, while the woman pleads for a conversation instead of the aggression.
Bhargava further insulted the woman by stating that she would remain blind in her next life. She had entered the church accompanied by members of various Hindutva groups, alleging that visually impaired children were being coerced into converting their faith.
According to police officials, the gathering was organized by Christian groups as part of Christmas festivities, where visually impaired students from a government hostel were invited for lunch and prayers.
The students present denied any claims of religious conversion during the event. An unnamed police officer mentioned that there was no evidence supporting the allegations of forced conversion.
Despite this, complaints were lodged by Hindutva organizations questioning the transportation of students to a religious venue without prior notification to authorities. They also alleged that the prayers held were distinctly Christian and that non-vegetarian meals were served.
In her defense, Bhargava stated that she acted upon receiving information that visually impaired women were being held against their will near the church. She claimed to have been assaulted during the incident but did not file a complaint, citing the woman's blindness.
Congress leader Supriya Shrinate condemned the actions, asserting that cruelty is a common tactic for advancement within the BJP. She referred to Bhargava as a stain on society.
