Controversy Erupts in Punjab Over Alleged Disrespect to Sikh Gurus by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann
Viral Video Sparks Outrage
A significant controversy has emerged in Punjab following the circulation of a video that allegedly shows Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann disrespecting Sikh Gurus. In response, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader has asserted that the individual depicted in the clip is not him. Mann has dismissed the accusations of disrespecting Sikh Gurus, claiming that his political opponents are orchestrating a smear campaign against him.
This incident coincides with a declaration from the Akal Takht, the highest religious authority for Sikhs, which labeled the Chief Minister as 'Guru Drohi' (anti-Guru) and 'Khalistani' in light of the contentious video. Sikh religious leaders have also accused Mann of misleading them regarding the authenticity of the footage.
Denial and Defense
The footage, reportedly filmed in a room, appears to show a person resembling the Chief Minister consuming alcohol and pouring it over images of Sikh Gurus. In a video message, Mann categorically denied being the person in the clip, stating, 'I completely reject this video.' He referred to a previous appearance before the Akal Takht in January, where he had already clarified that the individual in the footage was not him. Mann emphasized, 'The height and physique of the person in the video do not match mine.' He expressed astonishment at how individuals in high religious positions could propagate such falsehoods at the behest of their political masters.
