Controversy Erupts in Indore Over 'Vande Mataram' Dispute During Municipal Budget Meeting
Indore Municipal Budget Meeting Sparks Debate
During a recent budget discussion at the Indore Municipal Corporation, a female Congress councilor sparked controversy by refusing to sing 'Vande Mataram.' This incident occurred on Wednesday when Congress councilor Fauzia Sheikh Aleem arrived late to the meeting. Reports indicate that BJP councilors requested her to sing the patriotic song, which she declined.
Following her refusal, BJP members created a ruckus and began chanting slogans. Subsequently, the meeting's chairperson, Munnalal Yadav, suspended Fauzia Sheikh Aleem for one day.
Munnalal Yadav informed a news agency that 'Vande Mataram' has completed 150 years, and the central government has issued guidelines mandating its performance in all government offices. Fauzia Sheikh Aleem was absent during the singing of the song and later disrupted the proceedings upon her arrival. When members pointed out her absence, she made derogatory remarks about the song, leading to her suspension for obstructing the session.
Reactions from Fellow Councilors
In the meantime, Congress councilor Rubina Iqbal Khan expressed her surprise at the incident, stating that she has served alongside Fauzia Sheikh Aleem for the past 15 years, during which Aleem has consistently sung 'Vande Mataram.' Khan remarked that the events of that day were unclear, noting that Aleem had spoken out but the context of her comments was unknown.
Rubina Iqbal Khan emphasized that Fauzia Sheikh Aleem has always been present during the singing of 'Vande Mataram' and has shown respect for it. She questioned why there would be any objection to the song, which is a national anthem.
