Controversies Surround Arshdeep Singh Amid Punjab Kings' IPL Struggles
Arshdeep Singh Faces Backlash During IPL 2026
As the Punjab Kings (PBKS) navigate their IPL 2026 journey, lead bowler Arshdeep Singh finds himself embroiled in controversy due to his recent social media activities and interactions with teammates.
The team's pursuit of their first IPL title has hit a rough patch, leading to increased scrutiny and off-field distractions. Arshdeep's social media presence, particularly on platforms like Snapchat and YouTube, has previously showcased the team's camaraderie but has now drawn negative attention to internal dynamics.
A recent vlog featuring Arshdeep captured teammate Yuzvendra Chahal vaping on a flight from Ahmedabad to Hyderabad, prompting the pacer to delete the footage after it gained traction online. Additionally, he reportedly made a derogatory comment about Mumbai Indians (MI) player Tilak Varma's skin tone, jokingly asking, 'Oye Andhere, sunscreen lagaaya?' (Hey, dark one, did you apply sunscreen?) during a pre-match chat.
Old Video Resurfaces Amidst Current Controversy
In light of the ongoing issues surrounding Arshdeep's social media use, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the IPL governing body have taken a firm stance against off-field distractions. The Punjab Kings management has also advised Arshdeep to cease his vlogging during the tournament.
While he appeared to comply and focus on the crucial final matches, an older video resurfaced, reigniting the controversy. In a Snapchat clip from April 19, Arshdeep was seen teasing young batter Priyansh Arya about his teeth, making him visibly uncomfortable. 'What a cutie, man! Show me your smile. Show me your teeth,' he joked.
Punjab Kings' Playoff Hopes Dwindle
The Punjab Kings' season has taken a downturn, losing six consecutive matches after an initial unbeaten streak of seven. Led by Shreyas Iyer, the team was once on the brink of playoff qualification but now faces elimination.
Currently, PBKS sits fifth in the standings with six wins and six losses, totaling 13 points and a net run rate of +0.227. To keep their playoff hopes alive, they must defeat the Lucknow Super Giants and rely on favorable outcomes from other matches.
The Rajasthan Royals, currently in fourth place, along with the Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals, remain in contention, but their fates depend on both their performances and other teams' results.
As it stands, the Punjab Kings are effectively out of playoff contention and must focus on regaining their pride in the remaining matches.
