Controversial Encounter in Bihar Sparks Political Turmoil
FIR Filed Against Police in Controversial Encounter
In Bhojpur district, Bihar, an FIR has been lodged against police personnel involved in the controversial encounter of 28-year-old Bharat Bhushan Tiwari. Reports indicate that Tiwari's mother filed a murder complaint, leading to the registration of the FIR against the officers who fired the shots. This incident has ignited significant political controversy in Bihar, with ongoing protests in Bhojpur and various leaders, including those from the ruling coalition, questioning the police's actions. Opposition parties and local residents are also demanding a fair investigation into the matter.
Judicial Inquiry Announced by Bihar Government
Previously, the Bihar government announced a judicial inquiry into the encounter. Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary stated on social media that an independent judicial investigation would be conducted under the supervision of a retired High Court judge regarding the encounter that took place in Bilauti village on Wednesday. He emphasized that the inquiry would ensure a thorough and impartial examination of all aspects of the incident.
Police Actions and Legal Proceedings
The Bihar police have suspended four officers, including a Station House Officer (SHO), following the emergence of a video that allegedly shows an armed suspect pointing a gun at security personnel during the Bhojpur incident. Critics claim that the officers failed to act promptly. A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking the formation of an independent expert committee led by a former Supreme Court judge to investigate Tiwari's alleged extrajudicial killing. The petition also calls for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry, stressing the need for an immediate, independent, and fair investigation.
Details of the Encounter
According to police reports, during an operation in Bilauti village, Bharat Tiwari allegedly fired at the police team, prompting the officers to return fire in self-defense and to protect the public. Tiwari was injured in the shooting and later died while being transported to Patna Medical College and Hospital for treatment. Initially, the police described Tiwari as a 'mentally unstable' individual; however, family members and several local residents have refuted this claim, describing him as a social activist who regularly raised community issues and complaints before government officials.
