Controversial Dismissal Overshadows KKR's Thrilling Super Over Victory
Debate Over Raghuvanshi's Dismissal
During the IPL 2026 match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi was ruled out for obstructing the field, a decision that has ignited discussions among cricket enthusiasts. Former Indian cricketer Rohan Gavaskar expressed skepticism about the call, questioning its legitimacy.
The incident unfolded in the fifth over of KKR's innings when Raghuvanshi was declared out. Following this, he displayed his frustration by hitting the boundary cushion with his bat and tossing his helmet into the dugout.
This ruling has led to varied interpretations of the 'obstructing the field' rule, with opinions divided on whether Raghuvanshi's actions were intentional. Gavaskar, speaking to Cricbuzz, argued that the dismissal should not have been upheld, citing the batter's lack of awareness as he dived for the ball. 'He was focused on making the dive, not on the ball,' Gavaskar stated.
Fines Imposed on Raghuvanshi
On Monday, Raghuvanshi faced a penalty of 20% of his match fee and received one demerit point for violating the IPL Code of Conduct during the match against LSG.
According to an official IPL statement, Raghuvanshi was found guilty of a Level 1 offence under Article 2.2, which pertains to the misuse of cricket equipment or clothing during a match.
'Angkrish Raghuvanshi, batter and wicket-keeper for KKR, has been fined 20% of his match fee and has accrued one demerit point for breaching Level 1 of the IPL's Code of Conduct during Match No. 38 against LSG,' the statement detailed.
'The incident occurred in the fifth over when Raghuvanshi, after being ruled out for 'obstructing the field', struck the boundary cushion aggressively and threw his helmet into the dugout,' it added.
Level 1 breaches can result in penalties ranging from reprimands to fines and demerit points, depending on the severity of the infraction. Raghuvanshi acknowledged the offence and accepted the Match Referee's decision.
KKR Triumphs in a Nail-Biting Super Over
In the match itself, KKR narrowly defeated LSG in a gripping Super Over at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Sunday night.
With a tense finish, LSG required seven runs off the last ball when Mohammed Shami hit a six over long-off, pushing the game into a Super Over.
Earlier, KKR faced a tough challenge as Mohsin Khan claimed five wickets (5/23), disrupting their top order. However, Rinku Singh's outstanding performance, scoring an unbeaten 83 off 51 balls with seven fours and five sixes, helped KKR recover to a total of 155/7. His explosive batting, including four consecutive sixes in the final over, was crucial.
KKR's bowlers maintained pressure on LSG throughout the innings, but Shami's dramatic last-ball six forced the match into a Super Over. Rinku Singh was awarded Player of the Match for his exceptional innings.
