Congress Urges All-Party Meeting on Women's Reservation Post Elections
Call for Discussion on Women's Reservation
The Congress party stated on Tuesday that following the conclusion of the election campaign for the assembly elections, the government should convene an all-party meeting to discuss the implementation of women's reservation starting in 2029.
Party General Secretary Jairam Ramesh emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should focus on delivering justice to women rather than using them to advance his personal political agenda.
The main opposition party reiterated its demand for an all-party meeting on women's reservation after the campaign for the second and final phase of voting in the West Bengal assembly elections came to an end. Previously, the Congress and several other opposition parties had urged the government to hold such a meeting once the election campaigning was over.
The government had introduced a constitutional amendment bill related to delimitation and the implementation of women's reservation for 2029 during the last budget session of Parliament, but it was not passed. The opposition strongly opposed it, arguing that delimitation was being imposed under the guise of women's reservation.
Ramesh posted on 'X' that now that the election campaign has concluded and the government's attempts to carry out dangerous delimitation of Lok Sabha seats have failed due to opposition unity, it is time for the Prime Minister to address the demands that the opposition has consistently raised since March 2026.
He stated that an all-party meeting should be convened to discuss how the Nari Shakti Vandan Act, 2023, can be implemented with the current number of Lok Sabha seats starting in 2029. Ramesh asserted that this is not only possible but also necessary.
He added that during the special session of Parliament, women's reservation was never on the agenda; instead, the focus was solely on delimitation for the Prime Minister's political protection. Now, it is time for the Prime Minister to atone for his sins of using Indian women to further his personal political agenda and to provide them with justice.
