Congress Unveils Final Candidates for Assam Assembly Elections: Who's in the Race?

New Delhi: On Sunday, the Congress party revealed its fifth and final list of seven candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.
This announcement brings the total number of candidates declared by the party to 101 out of 126 seats in the state Assembly.
According to an official statement from K C Venugopal, the AICC general secretary for Organisation, the Central Election Committee (CEC) has finalized the candidates for the Assam Legislative Assembly elections.
Included in this final list are Joseph Hasda for the Gossaigaon seat, Birkhang Boro for Dotma-ST, Rajat Kanti Saha for Bijni, and Anchula Gwara Daimary for Bhergaon.
Additionally, Narayan Adhikari will contest from Mazbat, Nirmal Langthasa from Haflong-ST, and Amar Chand Jain from Katigorah.
Previously, on Friday, Congress had released its fourth list of candidates, which saw the dropping of a sitting MLA and left 11 seats for its ally, Raijor Dal.
As part of a six-party alliance, Congress has committed to leaving 15 seats for its partners in the elections.
The party has not held power in Assam since 2016, while the BJP-led government aims for a third consecutive term.
Currently, the ruling BJP holds 64 seats in the outgoing Assembly, with its allies Asom Gana Parishad having nine MLAs, United People's Party Liberal with seven, and Bodoland People's Front with three.
In contrast, the opposition consists of 26 Congress MLAs, 15 from AIUDF, one from CPI(M), and one Independent legislator.
Voting for the 126-member Assam Assembly is scheduled for April 9, with results to be announced on May 4.
