Congress President to Launch Manifesto

Guwahati, Mar 28: The president of the Congress party, Mallikarjun Kharge, is set to unveil the party's manifesto for the upcoming Assam assembly elections scheduled for April 9. This announcement was made by AICC general secretary Jitendra Singh during a press briefing on Saturday.

Singh explained that the manifesto is the result of extensive outreach efforts over several months, where party leaders and members engaged with citizens throughout the state.

"Kharge ji will present the manifesto in Lakhimpur," he noted.

On Sunday, Kharge will visit Lakhimpur district to participate in an election campaign meeting.

Singh criticized the current BJP-led state government, stating, "Fear has gripped the populace. If anyone dares to post anything critical of the government on social media, the police will be at their door before the day ends."

"Media outlets reporting on government corruption are facing intimidation," he added.

Addressing Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Singh remarked, "Whenever he speaks to the media, he seems more focused on our party than his own BJP. I recommend he introspects, as the BJP appears to be fracturing into two factions - one led by Himanta Biswa Sarma and the other being the 'original' BJP."

He also mentioned that prominent BJP figures, including former Chief Minister and Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal, have been marginalized within the party.

Singh confidently asserted that the Congress-led opposition is poised to reclaim power in the state. The elections for the 126-member assembly will take place on April 9, with the counting of votes scheduled for May 4.

The Congress party has not held power in Assam since 2016.
