New Delhi: On September 29, the Congress Working Committee is set to convene to outline its strategy against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the government, following reports of discord within the Election Commission regarding the SIR initiative, according to sources.

The meeting, which will be led by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, is expected to see participation from notable figures such as former party chief Rahul Gandhi and general secretaries Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Jairam Ramesh, and KC Venugopal.

Sources indicate that the party's top decision-making body will focus on intensifying its demands for Kumar's resignation and holding the government accountable.

Additionally, discussions are anticipated regarding preparations for the forthcoming elections.

The Congress party has accused the government of targeting Gen Z for exclusion and reiterated its call for Kumar to step down immediately.

Furthermore, the opposition has stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah will be held responsible for their alleged harmful intentions.

This criticism follows a report from Indian Express, which revealed that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections at least 14 times over the past ten months regarding decisions made without their consent, particularly concerning the SIR rollout.

Their concerns included issues related to the amendment of the statutory voter registration Form 6, management of voter list changes, and centralized control over the electoral roll database.

In response to the scrutiny faced due to the concerns raised by its commissioners, the Election Commission asserted that differing opinions are a standard aspect of discussions within any organization, emphasizing that all its directives are legally valid and adhere to established procedures.

The commission also stated that not only the three commissioners but every officer within the EC is empowered to provide suggestions aimed at enhancing the electoral system.
