Jorhat, May 8: In a suspected incident of violence following the elections, a small business owned by a Congress supporter in Titabor was reportedly set ablaze by unidentified individuals, with the family narrowly escaping serious harm early Friday morning.

The affected family has filed a First Information Report (FIR) at the Titabor Police Station, and authorities are currently investigating the matter.

The fire occurred at Rangajan Tiniali, targeting Rupali Das, who is known for her active campaigning for the Congress party and sharing political content on her social media account, 'Rupali Axom.'

“While we were asleep, around 1 or 1:30 am, my shop was on fire. Guests returning from a wedding two villages away noticed the flames and alerted us — that’s when we realized what was happening. I create videos supporting the Congress party. My three children and I were all asleep. This could have ended tragically for my family,” Rupali Das shared.

She further claimed that the attackers used petrol-filled bottles to ignite the fire, suggesting that the assault was aimed at harming her family.

Reports indicate that the shop was set on fire around 1 am while the family was asleep in their adjacent home, significantly heightening the danger to their lives. The fire completely destroyed the shop, resulting in losses amounting to several thousand rupees.

Local residents indicated that the situation could have been fatal if not for the quick actions of nearby villagers. A group heading to a wedding spotted the fire and raised the alarm, prompting immediate assistance from the community to extinguish the flames.

In a social media update, Rupali Das shared that Hemen Borah, president of the Jorhat Bar Association, expressed his support for her following the incident.

This event has heightened tensions in the locality, with claims that the attack was politically motivated. The police have yet to apprehend any suspects, and the investigation is ongoing.
