Congress President Questions Government's Inaction on Manipur Violence

In a recent statement, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for their inability to restore peace in Manipur, where violence has led to significant displacement. He raised pressing questions regarding the government's actions, including the status of a peace committee and the conditions of displaced individuals in relief camps. With over 300 lives lost since May 2023, Kharge emphasized the urgent need for accountability and effective governance in the region. His remarks come amid ongoing protests and unrest in the state, highlighting the critical situation faced by its residents.

Concerns Raised Over Manipur's Ongoing Violence

New Delhi. On Wednesday, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge directed pointed questions at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah regarding their failure to restore peace in Manipur, the widespread displacement of residents, and the lack of accountability.

In a post shared on the social media platform 'X', Kharge emphasized that the ongoing violence in this strategically significant border state is a stark indication of the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) complete inability to maintain law and order, safeguard constitutional rights, and ensure national security.

Kharge's remarks come at a time when the Kangpokpi district was completely paralyzed due to a shutdown called in protest against the murder of a 45-year-old Kuki individual. This shutdown coincided with the final day of a two-day shutdown in the Imphal Valley, protesting the killing of three Meitei individuals in an ambush in the Imphal East district.

In recent months, at least 50 lives have been lost in the state, primarily during clashes between the Naga and Kuki communities. This marked the first violent conflict between the Meitei and Kuki groups since July 13.

Kharge's Tough Questions

Kharge's Tough Questions

The Congress leader posed several critical questions to the central government:

  • What happened to the Peace Committee?: Kharge inquired about the status of the Peace Committee formed by Home Minister Amit Shah in June 2023. What measures have been taken to address the safety and security challenges faced by the people?

  • Recommendations of the Supreme Court Committee: He questioned what actions have been taken regarding the recommendations made by the committee led by Justice Geeta Mittal, appointed by the Supreme Court, to improve the conditions of displaced individuals living in relief camps.

  • Dire Conditions of Displaced Individuals: Kharge raised concerns, stating, “Despite the Supreme Court expressing worry over unnatural deaths in relief camps, why are thousands still forced to endure the pain of displacement?”

It is noteworthy that in September, the Supreme Court expressed deep concern over 34 unnatural deaths in camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) and questioned the state's failure to register criminal cases and conduct post-mortems.

Over 300 Lives Lost

Over 300 Lives Lost

Kharge cited statistics indicating that more than 300 precious lives have been lost since May 2023, with 24,530 individuals forced to live in deplorable conditions in relief camps. He pointed out that despite the imposition of President's Rule and the return of the BJP-led government, peace has not been restored in the state.

He criticized the government, stating, “Over three years, more than 300 deaths, President's Rule, and a change of Chief Ministers—who will take responsibility for this monumental failure of governance?” Kharge emphasized that given Manipur's strategic location near the international border, the central government's response has been profoundly disappointing. The state's security and stability should not be sacrificed due to the BJP's political failures.
