Congress Leader's Strong Remarks on Fuel Price Hikes
On Tuesday, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that the government is failing to address the issues faced by the poor amid the ongoing rise in fuel prices. This statement follows the fourth increase in fuel prices within less than two weeks, with petrol and diesel prices rising across India on Monday.
Kharge questioned Modi's priorities, expressing concerns over inflation, unemployment, and the escalating fuel costs. He remarked that it appears the Prime Minister is indifferent to these pressing issues and is leading the country towards ruin. Despite claiming to sacrifice for the nation, Kharge warned that if inflation and unemployment continue to rise, factories will shut down, leaving citizens frustrated with the government's inability to resolve their problems.
He further criticized the government for neglecting these issues and failing to consider what is in the nation's best interest. This is not a new problem; it has been escalating since the government took office. Kharge posed a rhetorical question about whether the leaders wish to govern the country or simply travel abroad as tourists.
Earlier that day, Kharge had also condemned the central government for the rising fuel prices despite a drop in global crude oil prices. In a post on social media, he accused the administration of profiting from fuel taxes and price hikes, thereby burdening the common man. He targeted the BJP-led government regarding inflation and fuel prices, stating, “What does a learned person need to understand?”
Quoting data from the Press Information Bureau, Kharge highlighted that when Modi assumed office on May 26, 2014, the price of crude oil was $108.05 per barrel, with the rupee-dollar exchange rate at 58.59. At that time, petrol was priced at ₹71.51 and diesel at ₹56.71 per liter. He noted that today, while crude oil prices are below $99 per barrel, petrol and diesel prices have surged to ₹102.12 and ₹95.20 per liter, respectively. In other words, crude oil has become cheaper, yet petrol has increased by approximately 42.8% and diesel by about 67.9%.
