Concerns Over India-US Relations

On Thursday, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh brought attention to the escalating tensions in India-US relations, describing the bilateral ties as being in a tumultuous phase. He criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, noting that he was among the first visitors to the White House during Donald Trump's second term. In a post on X, Ramesh pointed out that despite Modi's early visit, the relationship between India and the United States is currently facing significant turmoil.

Legislative Developments Complicate Relations

Ramesh also referenced various legislative and diplomatic developments that he believes are complicating India's position. The Rajya Sabha MP mentioned that Senator Lindsey Graham, a close ally of Trump, is introducing a bill that would impose extensive new sanctions on India due to its trade and other relations with Russia. Previously, Senator Bernie Moreno had proposed a bill that would levy a 25% tax on American companies that engage in 'outsourcing payments.'

Challenges Intensify

Adding to the challenges, Ramesh noted that Trump has been consistently praising Field Marshal Asim Munir, which he believes exacerbates India's discomfort. He emphasized that a 'new abnormal situation' has undoubtedly emerged in bilateral relations. Despite the Prime Minister's conciliatory statements, Ramesh stated that each day presents a new challenge. Earlier, on January 6, he claimed that American intervention had halted military tensions between India and Pakistan following Operation Sindoor last May, with the conflict ceasing after contact with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on May 10, 2025.
