This government action is a response to the increasing instability in West Asia, particularly the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. The conflict has led to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route that facilitates the transport of nearly one-fifth of the world's crude oil supply. Prior to this crisis, approximately 12-15% of India's oil imports passed through this route.
Impact on Fuel Prices and Supply
While the aim of the excise duty reduction is to provide relief to oil marketing companies facing losses due to rising crude oil prices, retail prices for petrol and diesel have remained unchanged.
