Pawan Khera's Strong Criticism of PM Modi
On Saturday, Congress leader Pawan Khera sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding his recent conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump. Khera accused Modi of displaying weakness and failing to protect India's interests following the alleged murder of three Indian sailors. During a press conference, he expressed that the nation witnessed a deeply embarrassing moment this week, one that left many with their heads hung in shame—especially those who truly care for India. He noted that Modi appeared submissive in front of Trump, with his eyes downcast and hands trembling, as he read from a paper, repeatedly addressing Trump as 'Excellency.'
Khera questioned the appropriateness of Modi's use of the term 'Excellency,' stating that even the translator felt embarrassed, opting to refer to Trump as 'Mr. President,' which is the correct form of address. He wondered who would use 'Excellency' in such a context. He further remarked that the conversation did not reflect the stature of India or its leadership, likening it to an agent speaking to a company owner rather than a representative of 1.5 billion citizens. This left him feeling a mix of embarrassment, sadness, and anger.
In comparing Modi to past Prime Ministers, Khera emphasized that India is a free nation. He recalled leaders like Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Narasimha Rao, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and Dr. Manmohan Singh, stating that he had never seen anyone bow down in such a manner or display such submission. He expressed doubt that the events of this week would be easily forgotten. Referring to the deaths of the three Indian sailors, Khera claimed that the U.S. did not express any remorse, highlighting that these innocent sailors were killed in broad daylight.
Khera continued, stating that Trump did not even offer an apology. He questioned why Trump would do so, suggesting that Modi was merely there to flatter the 'agent' and that such superficial compliments were all that mattered. He noted that when nothing else was left to say, Modi complimented Trump on his skin tone, which seemed to please the 'agent' immensely.
Maintaining his critique, Khera pointed out that while three Indian citizens were killed, Modi returned only after receiving compliments. He mentioned that Marco Rubio had reprimanded External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, advising him to stay within his limits, while Jaishankar returned with a sense of pride, and Modi seemed satisfied with the compliments he received about his skin. Khera questioned whether Modi's visit was solely for the purpose of receiving such flattery.
Addressing the government's foreign policy, Khera raised concerns about the arrogance displayed, questioning why they needed Trump's approval. He expressed disbelief that the government of the world's largest democracy would return in such a humiliating manner, stating it was both hard to believe and disheartening. He also criticized Modi for relying on prepared notes during the conversation, mocking the Prime Minister for laughing with the perpetrators and reading from slips, dubbing him 'Slips PM' in reference to the 'Slips CM' already known in Rajasthan and Haryana.
