Congress Leader Critiques Kaziranga Project, Advocates for Flood Prevention in Assam
Gaurav Gogoi's Strong Opposition to Kaziranga Project
Nalbari, Jan 17: Gaurav Gogoi, the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, expressed strong disapproval of the Central government's proposed Rs 7,000-crore project associated with Kaziranga National Park. He argued that such a significant investment would be better spent on constructing river embankments to effectively tackle Assam's persistent flooding issues.
Speaking at a public gathering at Milon High School's playground in the Tihu constituency, Gogoi highlighted that the priorities of the BJP-led administration are 'entirely out of touch' with the genuine challenges faced by the populace.
"If the Central government genuinely aimed to assist Assam, the Rs 7,000 crore earmarked for the Kaziranga elevated corridor should have been allocated to fortifying embankments throughout the state," he stated.
"Floods annually wreak havoc on lives, homes, and livelihoods. This funding could have provided enduring protection for countless families," he added.
Gogoi also raised concerns regarding the environmental implications of the Kaziranga initiative, noting that such extensive infrastructure projects have already alarmed conservationists.
"We have witnessed how elevated corridors disrupt wildlife movement and threaten the delicate ecosystem of Kaziranga. Development should not come at the expense of nature and the survival of communities," he remarked.
Earlier that day, Gogoi participated in a full-day program in Nalbari, walking from the Congress Rajiv Bhawan to the meeting site while engaging with local residents.
He was joined by Arun Tiwari, General Secretary of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, along with other senior leaders and local figures, including Ratul Patowari, president of the Nalbari District Congress Committee. The event saw a turnout of thousands of Congress supporters.
In response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Assam, Gogoi claimed that the BJP's announcements have not resulted in tangible benefits for the citizens.
He accused the ruling party of enabling land intended for the public to be seized by influential individuals.
"Land that should belong to the people is now under the control of BJP politicians. Fear has permeated daily life, with residents even afraid to keep livestock due to rampant theft," he stated.
Criticizing leaders who have switched allegiances, Gogoi remarked, "Those who once promised land rights, education, and healthcare weakened the Congress through corruption. Now, after joining the BJP, they are perpetuating the same issues and further undermining governance."
Gogoi reaffirmed the Congress's commitment to reviving the inclusive vision for Assam, as envisioned by figures like Jyotiprasad Agarwala.
"We aim to advance the 'Bor Assam' plan envisioned by Jyotiprasad Agarwala and other esteemed leaders. The people desire progress, dignity, and liberation from the current circumstances," he asserted.
Discussing political trends, Gogoi noted that public interest is increasingly leaning towards the Congress alliance. "There are ongoing discussions about the alliance, indicating that people are seeking alternatives," he commented.
He also called on the Prime Minister to visit Jubin Kshetra in Sonapur and bestow the Bharat Ratna upon the late singer Zubeen Garg, emphasizing that Assam's cultural icons merit national acknowledgment.
