Congress Leader's Strong Remarks Against Assam CM
On Tuesday, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh sharply criticized Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, labeling him as troubled, frustrated, and fearful. This criticism arose following a visit by a team from the Assam police to the residence of Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera in Delhi. The police action is linked to a high-profile passport controversy involving the Chief Minister's family, which emerged after a criminal defamation FIR was filed by Sarma's wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma.
In a conversation with reporters, Ramesh condemned the deployment of police officers outside Khera's home in Nizamuddin East, describing it as a "witch hunt" and an attempt by a "hubristic" government to silence opposition voices that are exposing alleged wrongdoings. He stated that the mobilization of police forces to arrest Khera for asking fundamental questions in the public interest demonstrates that the Chief Minister is indeed troubled, frustrated, and scared. Ramesh characterized the police action as not a legal procedure but rather a vengeful act, where a dictator misuses state machinery to suppress dissent. He added that those who intimidate others are often the ones who are truly afraid and have much to hide, indicating that the Chief Minister is facing defeat.
Congress leader Supriya Shrinate also criticized the Assam police, urging Chief Minister Sarma to address the allegations made by Khera instead of resorting to threats and insults. She emphasized that the accusations against Sarma are backed by witnesses and evidence, and they should be resolved appropriately. This controversy began two days prior after Khera's press conference, where he alleged that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma holds multiple passports (Indian, UAE, and Egyptian), has undisclosed properties in Dubai, and has a registered company in Wyoming, USA. The Sarma family has denied these allegations, claiming that the documents shared by Khera are "AI-generated fabrications" and "manipulated images" circulated through Pakistani social media groups.
