Congress Faces Setback as Udalguri Candidate Withdraws Ahead of Assam Elections

In a surprising turn of events, Suren Daimary, the Congress candidate for Udalguri, has resigned from the party and withdrawn his candidacy just a day before the Assam Assembly elections. Citing neglect and a lack of support from party leadership, Daimary's exit raises questions about the Congress's strategy and commitment in the region. This development follows a series of high-profile resignations from the party, potentially altering the electoral dynamics in Udalguri as the contest now shifts primarily to candidates from the UPPL and BPF. With the elections set for April 9, the Congress faces increasing challenges in maintaining its foothold in Assam.

Guwahati, Apr 8: Just one day before the Assam Assembly elections, the Indian National Congress (INC) encountered a significant blow as Suren Daimary, its candidate for Udalguri, announced his resignation from the party and withdrew his candidacy on Wednesday. He cited feelings of neglect and insufficient support as his reasons for this decision.

During a press conference, Daimary stated, “I have decided to resign and withdraw my candidacy because I feel deceived by the Congress. After receiving the ticket, there was a complete lack of communication and support from the leadership. My attempts to reach out went unanswered, leading me to this conclusion.”

He further expressed his dissatisfaction with what he perceived as the party's lack of dedication to the constituency.

“I aimed to bolster the Congress presence in Udalguri, but the party did not provide the necessary support. It seems their focus is narrow, neglecting all communities, including the Scheduled Tribes,” he remarked.

Previously, Daimary was set to compete against Dipen Boro from the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) and Rihon Daimary from the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF).

With his withdrawal, the electoral battle is now anticipated to primarily involve candidates from UPPL and BPF.

This incident is part of a trend of notable departures from the Congress leading up to the elections scheduled for April 9.

On March 17, senior leader and Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi left the party, expressing feelings of being “stifled” within the organization. He subsequently joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and is contesting from the Dispur constituency against Congress candidate Mira Borthakur and Independent candidate Jayanta Das.

In a similar vein, former APCC president Bhupen Borah resigned on February 16, reportedly feeling “ignored” by the party leadership. He too has joined the BJP and is now running from Bihpuria, where he faces Congress candidate Narayan Bhuyan, Independent candidate Hemen Gogoi, and Dr. Diganta Gogoi from the Voters Party International.

Daimary’s unexpected exit just before the elections adds to the challenges faced by the Congress, potentially shifting the political landscape in Udalguri.
