Congress Faces Setback as Assam MP Pradyut Bordoloi Resigns

In a surprising move, Assam MP Pradyut Bordoloi has resigned from the Congress party, citing internal issues and a lack of support from leadership. This decision could reshape the political dynamics in Upper Assam, where Bordoloi has been a significant figure for decades. His resignation raises questions about his potential shift to the BJP and the future of Congress in the region. As the assembly elections approach, the implications of this development are profound, prompting discussions about party loyalty and political strategy.

Major Setback for Congress Ahead of Assembly Elections

In a significant blow to the Congress party before the upcoming assembly elections, Assam's Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi has submitted his resignation to party president Mallikarjun Kharge, effectively severing his ties with the party. This decision comes amid allegations of internal misconduct within the party.

In his resignation letter addressed to Kharge, Bordoloi expressed his deep sorrow, stating, "With great regret, I am resigning from all positions, privileges, and primary membership of the Indian National Congress today."

Bordoloi's Reasons for Resignation

Speaking to reporters, Bordoloi revealed that he felt compelled to abandon one of his core principles, a decision he is not pleased with. He explained that he faced continuous humiliation from various individuals within the Assam Congress, which led to his feelings of isolation. He noted that the party leadership showed no sympathy towards him, making him feel very alone despite his lifelong association with Congress. He mentioned, "I have been struggling to make ends meet lately, which forced me to make this decision. Yes, I have submitted my resignation to the AICC president."

Speculations About Joining BJP

This resignation has sparked speculation that Bordoloi may join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the near future. Sources close to the situation suggest that his departure could significantly alter the political landscape in the region, particularly in Upper Assam, where he has been a prominent Congress leader for decades. At 66, Bordoloi has been a key figure in Assam's Congress since the late 1990s, beginning his legislative career by winning the Margerita assembly seat in 1998 and serving four consecutive terms until 2016. During this time, he held several important ministerial positions in the Assam government from 2001 to 2015.

Bordoloi's Contributions to Congress

Known for his organizational skills and strong grassroots presence, Bordoloi played a crucial role in strengthening Congress's foothold in Upper Assam and mentoring young party leaders. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he successfully contested from the Nagaon constituency, further enhancing his political reputation and influence among voters in the region.
