Congress Faces Setback as 12 Councillors Join BJP in Ambernath
Significant Shift in Ambernath Municipal Council
In a surprising turn of events, the Congress party has suffered a major setback in the Ambernath Municipal Council, where twelve of its councillors have defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This move is expected to bolster the BJP's position in the region. The councillors officially joined the BJP at the party's Maharashtra headquarters in Navi Mumbai, in the presence of state party chief Ravindra Chavan.
In response to this development, Congress has decided to suspend these councillors, labeling their actions as illegal and unconstitutional. Party spokesperson Sachin Sawant stated that the councillors violated constitutional provisions by switching allegiance to the BJP. He also mentioned that the party would issue notices to them.
Congress's Legal Action Against Defectors
Sawant emphasized that this act is entirely unlawful. He pointed out that forming an independent group after being elected under a party symbol or joining another political party later is not only unethical but also unconstitutional. The Congress party plans to initiate legal proceedings to annul the memberships of these councillors, with legal notices expected to be dispatched soon.
