Congress Demands Political Accountability Amid Corruption Allegations
The Congress party has called for political accountability, urging ministers to resign when their close associates face corruption allegations. Citing the example of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh questioned the existence of moral responsibility in Indian politics today. He emphasized that ministers should feel compelled to resign if they are aware of wrongdoing or face further scrutiny if they claim ignorance. The party also alleged that a significant scam led to recent dismissals within the Ministry of Environment, which they claim has failed in its duties to protect the environment. This call for accountability reflects a broader concern about governance and ethical standards in politics.

Call for Ministerial Resignations
On Friday, the Congress party urged for political accountability, stating that ministers should contemplate resigning when close associates are dismissed over corruption allegations, emphasizing their duty to uphold 'Raj Dharma'. The party referenced the recent termination of four employees from the office of Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav as a case in point.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh criticized the government by recalling the example of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.
Ramesh questioned on social media whether the concept of moral responsibility still exists in Indian politics. He highlighted that Shastri set a high standard by resigning from his position as Railway Minister following a train accident in Tamil Nadu exactly 70 years ago. While his example is often praised, few seem to follow in his footsteps.
He stated that when four close associates of a minister are dismissed due to corruption allegations, it should prompt the minister to feel a sense of moral obligation to resign. Ramesh argued that if these ministers were aware of the wrongdoing, they share the blame; if they claim ignorance, it raises further concerns and justifies their resignation.
The Congress leader also referenced former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, asserting that it is time for ministers to fulfill their 'Raj Dharma', as Vajpayee reminded Modi fourteen years ago. This 'Raj Dharma' encompasses both moral responsibility and political accountability. The Congress party alleged on Thursday that a "massive scam" led to these dismissals.
Following the dismissal of Yadav's four close aides within two days, the party claimed that governance in the Ministry of Environment has deteriorated. Ramesh accused the ministry of failing to protect the environment and forests in the country, suggesting it has become more of a preaching ministry. According to separate official orders issued on July 3, the ministry removed Yadav's private secretary and two additional private secretaries simultaneously.
