Congress Demands Action Against Defence Minister for Misleading Parliament on Soldier Casualties

In a significant political move, Congress leader KC Venugopal has called for privilege proceedings against Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, alleging that Singh misled Parliament regarding the casualties of Indian soldiers following the Pahalgam terror attack. Venugopal's accusations stem from Singh's statements made during a parliamentary debate, where he claimed no soldiers were harmed, contradicting later reports of six military personnel fatalities. This controversy raises questions about accountability and transparency within the government, as Venugopal emphasizes the need to honor the sacrifices of the fallen soldiers. The defence ministry has responded, asserting that the minister's statements were misrepresented. This unfolding situation highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding military operations and government communications.

Congress Leader's Allegations Against Defence Minister

New Delhi: On Tuesday, Congress leader KC Venugopal addressed a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, urging the initiation of privilege proceedings against Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Venugopal accused Singh of misleading Parliament by asserting that no Indian soldiers were martyred following the Pahalgam terror attack last year.

In his correspondence, Venugopal invoked Rule 223 of the Lok Sabha's procedural guidelines, claiming that Singh's statements misled the House during discussions about the terrorist incident and the subsequent Operation Sindoor.

During the debate on July 28, 2025, Singh reportedly stated that no Indian soldiers had suffered casualties. However, Venugopal pointed out that a later announcement confirmed the deaths of six armed forces personnel during Operation Sindoor.

Venugopal emphasized that Singh's assertion in Parliament was not only misleading but also incorrect, highlighting that such actions constitute a breach of privilege and contempt of the legislative body.

He requested that appropriate actions be taken against the Defence Minister for this matter, reinforcing his position as the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee.

In a post on social media platform X, Venugopal accused Singh of deceiving the Indian populace during the Lok Sabha debate on Operation Sindoor, questioning how the minister could claim no soldiers were lost in July 2025, only for the military to later announce the deaths of six soldiers.

He expressed that this situation is a serious affront to the families of the fallen soldiers and the entire armed forces, stating that their bravery and sacrifice were not adequately acknowledged.

The six military personnel, comprising five from the Indian Army and one from the Indian Air Force, were recently honored with their names inscribed on a wall at the National War Memorial, marking the first public acknowledgment of their sacrifice since the military operation in May 2025.

In response to the controversy, the defence ministry stated that the nation paid tribute to the soldiers at the earliest opportunity and emphasized that their memory would be honored with the respect it deserves.

The ministry also addressed claims circulating on social media, asserting that these posts misrepresented Singh's statements made in Parliament, selectively quoting parts of his speech to falsely suggest he claimed no soldiers had died during Operation Sindoor.

Operation Sindoor was launched as a direct response to the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025, which resulted in the loss of 26 lives, primarily civilians.
